Still There was More in 2004...

MORE THAN A DECADE PASSED before the cosmos demanded attention to Our Hero again. Just as before, a look at the calendar revealed that time was approaching the 30 year mark since the third double album release aptly named TODD.

There had not been before, nor has there since been, a concept such as that of the offer to fans to submit their names for inclusion in a major album release. Most fans have come to know of the post card included in A Wizard/A True Star that became their ticket to Rock and Roll immortality. An estimated 10,000 or so lucky individuals invested a mere 8¢ not knowing precisely what outcome would come to pass.

The poster in the following album, TODD,
remains one of the most novel and meaningful representations of the Star/Fan relationship. It was my infatuatioin with this concept which spurred the 1992 tribute project. There was no way I was going to let the chance pass to honor the 30th anniversary mark.

Two things helped push this project into a new realm. First, I knew that T-Shirts had to be in the running from day one and that the costs needed to reflect the changes in advertising rates. Second, and perhaps more important, the advent of the Internet allowed less expensive promotion (with greater connection to fans) AND the ease of payment via PayPal.

The "name only" inclusion donation amount was set at $20, and shirts plus the name listing was given for contributions of $40. In addition, other prizes such as TR biography books autographed by the author (Billy James), posters, pins, and buttons were added once the base advertising costs were raised. The result was a quarter page full-color ad in issue #965. Woo-hoo!
